Kulturnatten is an annual one-day cultural event in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg, held on the Friday before the school autumn holiday. It was first held in 1993 with 45 institutions; today more than 200 museums, theatres, libraries, town halls, churches, ministries and culture houses take part. It has been described as Denmark's largest one-day event for more than 30 years.
The association Foreningen Kulturnatten runs it, while the individual events are organised by the participating institutions. It is non-commercial and receives no state or municipal grants, but is funded by sales of the Kulturpas, a culture pass that gives free admission to events and includes transport. Den Lille Kulturnat, for children up to 12, is held in March.
