The palace is the private home of the royal family and is made up of four palaces where the family has its residence when in Copenhagen. The museum is in Christian VIII's Palace and shows the royal family's historic working rooms, the Gallasal ballroom, still used on special occasions, and the Fabergé Chamber with Fabergé objects. The present complex was built from 1750 as the centre of Frederiksstaden.

A visit can be combined with the Life Guards' changing of the guard on the square next to the museum. The public garden Amaliehaven, open since 1983, lies between the palace and the harbour. The entrance and parking are wheelchair accessible.
