The palace stands on Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen and houses the royal reception rooms, including the Knights' Hall (Riddersalen) and the Throne Room (Tronsalen), where King Frederik X was proclaimed from the balcony in 2024. Bjørn Nørgaard's tapestries on 1,000 years of Danish history hang here, and beneath the palace lie the ruins of Absalon's castle and Copenhagen Castle, around 800 years old. The present palace, the third on the site, was inaugurated in 1928; the Palace Chapel survived both earlier fires.
It is run by Den Kongelige Samling (the Royal Collection), which also manages Rosenborg Castle and Amalienborg Museum. The entrance and toilet are wheelchair accessible, but there is no accessible parking and no hearing loop.
