The building is the old University Library and part of the University of Copenhagen's library system. It opened in 1861 and was used as a library until 2009. It was designed by the architect Johan Daniel Herholdt, who won the first architectural competition for a public building in Denmark, and was built with room for 300,000 volumes. Visitors can see the beautiful book hall and posters on the university's history and research.
There are guided tours in English of the historic University Quadrangle at 2 pm. There is a shop selling merchandise, and the building hosts events and exhibitions such as author and research talks. The entrance is wheelchair accessible.
