This square in the historic centre of Odense lies close to H.C. Andersens Hus. It dates back to 1238, when Dominican monks began building a monastery and its church. The monastery passed to the King at the Reformation in 1536 and later decayed; its outline is marked in the square with "brass buttons". Odense Comediehus, the province's first theatre, was built here in 1795, and H.C. Andersen made his stage debut there in 1812.
Every Wednesday and Saturday morning a fresh food market sells vegetables, flowers, eggs, fish and cheese. Since 1952 the city's markets have been gathered here. Admission is free, dogs are allowed, and there is a picnic table. The entrance is wheelchair accessible.
