This bronze sculpture of a reclining female figure is by the Danish artist Svend Wiig Hansen. It was unveiled in 1992 in front of Odense City Hall, and it is about 2.5 metres high and over 5 metres long. The name refers to the sea and to the myth of Aphrodite born from sea foam, and the work is also inspired by the statues of Easter Island. Its themes are fertility, love and femininity. It has caused debate about both its form and its placement.
The work stands directly on the paving without a plinth, so that it is close to people. Children climb on it, and parts of the bronze have been polished by hands and feet. Admission is free, dogs are allowed, and access is wheelchair accessible.
