This is a self-governing institution that has offered higher education in fine art since 1964. It grew out of a private school founded in 1960 by four local artists. Since the late 1990s, teaching has been interdisciplinary and conceptual, and a media lab for video and digital images replaced older workshops. The academy is known for its freedom to experiment.
It is housed in new premises in Aarhus Sydhavn. It is a member of KUNO, a cooperation body for higher fine-arts education in the Nordic-Baltic region, and holds an Erasmus University Charter. It runs public events and exhibitions, including a third-year student exhibition.
