What is Constitution Day in Denmark?

In brief. Grundlovsdag, Denmark's Constitution Day, is marked on 5 June in memory of the first Danish constitution of 1849. In 2027 it falls on a Saturday. Its national significance does not give everyone paid time off: employment conditions, shop closures and museum hours must be checked separately. Basis: Folketinget and 3F. Checked 4 November 2026.

What does Grundlovsdag mean for Denmark?

It is Constitution Day and an occasion to discuss democracy, rights and citizens' participation in public life. On 5 June 1849, Frederik VII signed the first Danish constitution. It changed the structure of state power, but political rights were extended later. Saying that everyone could vote from that day is therefore incorrect. Folketinget on the constitution's history; checked 4 November 2026.

Women and other previously excluded groups gained voting rights in 1915. The current constitution is dated 5 June 1953. The commemorative date connects several stages of history, rather than a single celebration. Folketinget on the current constitution; checked 4 November 2026.

The day's national significance is expressed through public speeches and gatherings. This does not promise one nationwide parade or an identical family custom across the country. The Folketinget announcement for 2026 gives an example of a public celebration; choose a specific event from its own programme.

If comparing a May trip with a June trip, use the guide to spring in Denmark for seasonal context. Grundlovsdag itself falls in June.

Does Constitution Day entitle you to time off?

Not automatically. The date's name and public significance do not determine an individual worker's right to time off or pay. 3F points to collective agreements, employment contracts and workplace rules. Checked 4 November 2026.

For a traveller, a different question is useful: is the place you want to visit open at your chosen time? An employee's answer about their day off and a museum's admission calendar serve different purposes.

Why might shops close if it is not a public holiday?

Because trading rules list Grundlovsdag separately. Erhvervsstyrelsen on Virksomhedsguiden explains the general retail restriction and exceptions, including for some grocery shops. Checked 4 November 2026.

From 1 January 2027, Act no. 1754 of 29 December 2025 permits retail trading in certain designated town centres in towns with fewer than 16 850 residents. For towns without a designated town centre, there is an option involving a local centre. The exception does not cover shopping centres and other centres (øvrige centre), department stores and hypermarkets with a total gross floor area for retail purposes of more than 15 000 m². Erhvervsstyrelsen sets the list of towns. Order no. 900 listing the towns for 2027 takes effect on 1 January 2027, as does the change; checked 4 November 2026. No particular town or shop is assessed here as qualifying for the exception.

This is permission for qualifying shops, not a duty to open. Find the specific branch's hours for 5 June before going. Include food for the journey in your plans in advance; the food costs guide helps plan shopping without promising that every supermarket will open.

Are banks and museums open on 5 June?

Nationalbanken includes 5 June in its 2027 bank closing calendar. It is also a Saturday that year. Plan counter service for another confirmed working day; ask your own bank about payment deadlines or an urgent transfer. Checked 4 November 2026.

Museums have their own calendars. For example, Nationalmuseet publishes seasonal hours and specific closures. For June, use the relevant season rather than November's “open today”. This shows where to check hours, not confirmation of admission on every future day. Checked 4 November 2026.

Build the day around one confirmed visit. If its hours fit, add a walk and lunch. This makes the plan less dependent on shops opening and avoids turning the commemorative date into a shopping day.

How do you find the Constitution Day 2027 programme?

Open the organiser's announcement dated 5 June 2027. Check the entrance, time, registration, language and arrangements for children. A general visitor page or last year's news cannot replace your chosen day's programme.

An archive example: Folketinget on 5 June 2026 invited visitors to events from 10:00 to 15:00, with free admission and no registration. Those conditions applied specifically to 2026. For 2027, use the organiser's new announcement. Checked 4 November 2026.

For a regular parliamentary visit, read Folketinget's practical information. It describes booking, entry at Rigsdagsgården and security screening. For a standard booked visit it specifies arrival 15 minutes early; a special event may have its own instructions. Checked 4 November 2026.

What do the flags and the overlap with Father's Day mean?

5 June appears in the official list of flag days. Justitsministeriet explains that state institutions fly the relevant flag, while private individuals can choose whether to fly the ordinary Dannebrog. Do not apply the state rule to every family. Checked 4 November 2026.

Danish Father's Day, Farsdag, also falls on 5 June. Info Norden lists it separately from Grundlovsdag. This explains why a public event and a family gathering may share a date. Checked 4 November 2026.

How do you plan a trip for 5 June?

Start with the opening hours of your main visit, then arrange transport. In Rejseplanen, enter a station or address, the date and departure or arrival time. Search separately for the return journey. Checked 4 November 2026.

For city travel, use the guide to Copenhagen transport zones and the comparison of Rejsebillet, Rejsekort-app and DSB. These pages explain ticket choices; check June fares when buying.

If driving, read the sign at the parking space itself and the parking rules for Denmark. The day's name cannot replace the posted hours, payment requirements and conditions for that particular location.

An example: two adults choose one visit for Saturday 5 June 2027, save their confirmation, arrange outward and return travel and plan food in advance. If a special programme has not yet been published, base the day on an available booking or a walk rather than last year's events.

Before you go

  • Confirm the date and opening hours of your main visit.
  • Check the ticket, registration, language and entrance.
  • Find the return journey for your date.
  • Check hours for your chosen shop and place to eat.
  • Allow time for security checks and connections.
  • Check the forecast and have an indoor option.
