This is a reconstructed wash place by the Odense river, recreated by Odense Municipality to show how it looked about 100 years ago. No original wash places from the period remain. H.C. Andersen's mother worked as a washerwoman, and nearby are the former school for poor children, which H.C. Andersen attended, and Odense Adelige Jomfrukloster, a convent founded in 1716.
The site is part of Eventyrhaven, the park along the river, where the common moorhen is often seen. Nearby are the Albani Bridge from 1858 and Klokkedybet, the bottomless deep in the river that H.C. Andersen wrote about in 1856.
