This viewpoint is on Stige Ø in Odense Fjord, an artificial island built from soil dug out for the Odense Canal between 1796 and 1803. The highest hilltops are close to 30 metres and give open views over the fjord's cultural landscapes.
The island has a long history: Stige Badeetablissement, a bathing establishment, was founded in 1894, and the Søpavillon restaurant burned down during the German occupation. The Sorthusene (the Black Houses), a colony of up to 63 buildings from the early 1900s, was about half demolished in 1967. The island was a landfill from 1967 to 1994 and is now a recreational area. The entrance is wheelchair accessible.
