This institute is a self-governing body under the Ministry of Culture, tasked with creating overview and insight into physical activity and folk enlightenment (folkeoplysning) nationally and internationally. It comprises Idan, Videncenter for Folkeoplysning (Vifo) and Play the Game. Idan analyses Danes' exercise habits, municipal facilities and clubs, and elite athletics, while Play the Game promotes openness and freedom of expression in international competition and holds an annual conference.
It has operated since 2005, has more than 20 employees and is governed by a six-member board. It publishes reports, podcasts and webinars and runs the Fritidsdatakompas.
