The school was founded in 1966, first on Christianshavn with 15 students. It came out of the 1964 Danish film law, which treated film as an art form, and offers programmes in documentary and fiction directing, animation, producing, screenwriting, cinematography, sound, editing, production design and game development.
There are also continuing education, short courses, masterclasses and modules, including AI in film, green production management and financing. The school has had eight rectors and about 1,000 students in total. The entrance and parking are wheelchair accessible.
