The venue is in Kødbyen in Copenhagen and was founded in 1996 by Copenhagen Municipality and Kulturby '96 to promote art photography in Denmark. It is one of the few remaining Danish institutions dedicated to exhibiting and presenting contemporary photography, with three to four shows a year, including the annual series Ung dansk fotografi (Young Danish Photography).
There are free public guided tours and teaching materials for lower and upper secondary levels, and all primary, lower secondary and upper secondary schools in Copenhagen Municipality have free admission. Lectures and other events are held during the exhibitions, including on Kulturnatten (Culture Night). The entrance and toilet are wheelchair accessible.
