The artists' association behind the building is the oldest in Denmark, founded in 1891 by J.F. Willumsen and Vilhelm Hammershøi, among others, as an alternative to the censored exhibitions at Charlottenborg. The building was designed by Willumsen, built in 1893 and moved to Oslo Plads in 1898. With its temple-like architecture and a gilded, winged Pegasus above the entrance, it was one of the first in Denmark designed for art exhibitions.
Contemporary art is shown here, including the autumn exhibition Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling and the annual Decembristerne show. The association is still run by its artist members. The entrance and toilet are wheelchair accessible.
