Det Lille Apotek is a landmark restaurant on Store Kannikestræde in Copenhagen’s old town, dating back to 1720 and known as the city’s oldest restaurant. Over the years it has welcomed famous Danish writers such as Hans Christian Andersen, and today it attracts guests who want to experience “real Denmark” in a historic setting. Low ceilings, oil lamps, dark wood and old paintings make the dining rooms feel like a cosy time capsule.

The kitchen focuses on classical Danish dishes: smørrebrød with several kinds of herring, traditional æggekage, warm plaice fillet with homemade remoulade, wiener schnitzel, roast duck with browned potatoes and the signature Apothecary stew. At lunchtime, generous sharing plates bring together fish, meats, rye bread, duck fat and butter, while the drinks list highlights Danish beers and a wide range of aquavits. Rather than modern fusion, Det Lille Apotek offers a faithful interpretation of old recipes, turning each meal into a small journey back in time.
