SMK – the National Gallery of Denmark – stands on Sølvgade next to Østre Anlæg park, a short walk from Nørreport Station and Copenhagen’s historic centre. The original late 19th-century building in an Italian Renaissance–inspired style is linked to a bright modern extension by a glass “Street of Sculptures” overlooking the park. Together they house the largest art collection in Denmark, with more than 200,000 works spanning roughly 700 years.
The permanent displays range from European art 1300–1800 – featuring masters like Mantegna, Titian, Rubens and Rembrandt – to Danish and Nordic art of the Golden Age, French Modernism with Matisse and Picasso, and Danish and international art after 1900. The Royal Collection of Graphic Art holds an enormous archive of drawings and prints, while changing exhibitions, talks and events keep the programme dynamic throughout the year. A café and design-focused museum shop make it easy to turn your visit into a full cultural day.
